Contributions From our earnings, as well as through the Macy's Foundation, Bloomingdale's is able to channel much-needed funding directly to charitable organizations, civic programs, community projects, and arts/cultural and educational institutions in dozens of cities. Areas of ongoing special focus for our giving include women's issues, such as breast cancer and domestic violence, colorectal cancer, and HIV/AIDS.In addition, the Macy's Foundation matches qualifying employee contributions to educational institutions, arts/cultural institutions and hunger as well as to organizations focused on women's issues and HIV/AIDS. In addition, in 2004 alone, Bloomingdale's and its associates gave over $333,000 to United Way through local United Way campaigns in the communities where we operate. Special Events Each year, Bloomingdale's develops and hosts hundreds of special events. It's part of the excitement of the theater of department store retailing. In many cases, these events involve community-based causes and charity organizations, which gain through increased public exposure and funds raised: - Bloomingdale's is proud to be one of the original corporate sponsors of the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA), founded by Katie Couric, Lily Tartikoff and the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Bloomingdale's developed the Caring Star, declared the official symbol of hope for the NCCRA, with all net proceeds from the sale of the Star being donated to the Alliance. In the past year, our customers' purchases, donations and cause related marketing efforts enabled Bloomingdale's to not only raise over $1,300,000 but also the necessary awareness essential to finding a cure.
- For the fourth holiday season in 2004, Bloomingdale's has asked Gund, the oldest leading soft toy manufacturer in the U. S., to create the Little Brown Bear. Each bear sold helps fight Juvenile Diabetes. In 2004, Bloomingdale's donated $50,000 from the sales of the Little Brown Bear to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide.
- Shopping Benefits have been held in almost every location to raise money for diverse causes from Cancer Education, Research and Awareness to the Alisa Ann Ruch Burn Foundation.
