Manager, Information Systems and Communications"I had the opportunity to join Macy's, Inc. in its construction department and oversee their computer-aided design systems, which was a great way to explore computers while maintaining my touch on architecture. Since then, I have been continually learning new things."
Why did you join Macy's Corporate Services and why have you stayed?
My background is in architecture, and after working in that field for a few years after college, I wanted to break away and develop my interest in computers. I had the opportunity to join Macy's, Inc. in its construction department and oversee their computer-aided design systems, which was a great way to explore computers while maintaining my touch on architecture. Since then, I have been continually learning new things, which is why I have stayed.
What do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities?
I service and support the SPACE division of Macy's, Inc., which stands for Store Planning, Architecture, Construction and Engineering. I provide technical support for the computer-aided design systems, help out with any computer-related issues with the programs, establish policies and procedures for the systems and disseminate information for our consultants. What I enjoy most is that I feel like I am really helping people solve problems related to their computers - it is satisfying when I can meet their needs and make them happy.
What contribution do you make to your division and how do you feel you make a difference?
I think my major contribution to my group is being able to translate information to everyone in terms that they can understand. I usually help write the memos and policy issues and help resolve communication problems. I think that is also how I make a difference - by communicating with everyone in terms that are not complicated. I hope I make computers more approachable and less intimidating.
What has been your most memorable moment since joining the company?
September 11 is my most memorable moment because I was on a business trip in Seattle, and the first word about the tragedy actually came from my co-workers, who had called to make sure I was safe. It also changed my perspective on my work, and I've learned to take everything easy and not get uptight about problems at work. I just try to enjoy every day.
How has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you?
The training has helped me a lot both professionally and personally. On the professional level, I've learned about computer systems and management processes. On a personal level, I've learned how to interact with people of different backgrounds and personalities, which has helped me develop friendships, as well as patience and tolerance.
Is community involvement important to you, have you been involved in any projects in your division and was this something you considered when joining the company?
I just moved to the home office, which is very active in the community, so I am looking forward to getting involved.
What do you like best about your work environment?
I enjoy working with the people because everyone is wonderful - my co-workers are friendly, open, and willing to learn and take on new things with an open mind.
What personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work?
I play the piano and enjoy reading. I use those activities as a release after work, so they don't interfere at all. Also, I am learning how to edit home videos for my family, which actually complements my work because I am learning editing skills at work and get to practice at home.
What advice would you give to a new associate joining the company? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals?
Definitely try to learn as much as possible from your supervisors and respect them for their abilities. When you give respect, you get respect back, and you learn a lot. Everyone has something to teach you. Also, don't be afraid to express your ideas and opinions. I've moved ahead by asking lots of questions, learning as much as I can, and applying the information to my own work situations.
What do you see in the future for Macy's, Inc.?
This is not a good time economically for retail. But Macy's, Inc. has a lot of good programs in place that will help them through the downturn. The company is using this time as an opportunity to re-evaluate processes, and to streamline and improve them. I think Macy's, Inc. will have a good future through embracing new technology.
