Mario

Store Detective

"When I started, I wasn't thinking of this job as a career. But, the longer I work here, the more I see that this company has a lot of opportunities for their employees. I know if I continue here, I will get rewarded."

bulletWhy did you join Macy's, Inc. and why have you stayed?
I joined Macy's, Inc. because my job at the time was moving really slow. I am a family man with two kids. I needed to continue working to provide for my family and this seemed like a great place to work. I have stayed because of the hard work that is required of me and the motivation I have for my job. This company has become a place where I think I can build a career, not just have a job for a little while. I really enjoy working in my department and I hope to stay here.

bulletWhat do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities?
I enjoy all the aspects of my job from dealing with customers to picking up shoplifters. My overall job responsibilities involve protecting the assets of the store. I catch shoplifters and investigate dishonest employees. I do a lot of general things for the loss prevention department. Dealing with the customers is what I enjoy the most. It's great to talk to them and really help them out when they are in trouble.

bulletWhat contribution do you make to your division and how does this contribute to the company's overall success?
The contribution I make to the company is my desire to be the best at what I do. I try to do anything that I can to make sure the assets of the company are protected. By doing my job and making sure everything is protected, I help the overall success of this department and the store itself.

bulletWhat has been your most memorable moment since joining the company?
It was when an elderly lady came into the office and asked for help. She had come to the store with her nursing home to shop for the day. Usually, they all ride over on a bus together which then comes back to pick them up at the end of the day. She came in because she thought the bus might have left without her. I made a few phone calls and was able to find out that it did. I called a cab, walked out with her and waited until the cab showed up. I then helped her in the car and told her she was on her way home and would be alright. It really felt good to help her out. She was scared and really confused.

bulletHow has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you?
The training I have received has helped me by teaching me to focus on the job at hand. I also realize that sometimes the way I think a job should be done might not necessarily be the best way to do it. I have also learned from experience that if we work as a team, most of the issues we face can be resolved easily and quickly.

bulletWhat do you like best about your work environment?
It's the camaraderie that we have here. All the people I work with are really great. We all work together as a team to accomplish the company's goals. Each person has a different role, but we all work together to get the job done. We are also all friends and we talk about things both professionally and personally. Most of us see each other outside the workplace.

bulletWhat personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work?
One of the things I like to do most is paint. So, when I have days off or when I get off early from work, I go home and spend time painting and drawing. I balance them very easily because when I have the time to do it, I make sure to take advantage of it. I mostly do it on the days I get to go home early. Sometimes, I do have to stay late because I cover for a lot of people. My family doesn't mind because they know that if the company needs me here, it's important to me that I stay and help. It really helps that both my family and co-workers understand my priorities and allow me the flexibility to do both.

bulletWhat advice would you give to a new employee joining the company in a position similar to yours? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals?
I would advise a new employee to come in with an open mind, set goals and work hard to get them. They should also keep in mind that hard work and dedication are rewarded at this company by promotions and recognition. Hard work is what helped me get ahead. I make sure to come in every day and do my job to the best of my ability. It's important to me that I do a good job and that it gets done correctly. Hopefully, all my hard work and dedication will continue to help me move forward in the future. When I started, I wasn't thinking of this job as a career, but the longer I work here, the more I see that this company has a lot of opportunities for their employees. I know if I continue here, I will get rewarded.

bulletWhat do you see in the future for Macy's, Inc.?
I think Macy's will continue growing and expanding. Macy's is constantly working to make this company bigger and better than it was before. I also know that as it continues to evolve and grow, I will grow right along with it.
