Atlanta sizzles in the Highlands and Buckhead with their variety of electric restaurants and high-energy clubs. And for those not in to cover charges and dress codes, there are plenty of sports bars and laid back pubs to enjoy a drink or two. Check out Fado's in Buckhead, which houses a museum of Irish pub culture along with traditional Irish beers. Another popular area for the locals is Little Five Points, an eclectic display of Atlanta's many ethnic influences. When it comes time for lunch or dinner, you'll have the choice of literally hundreds of BBQ joints around Greater Atlanta. Fat Matt's, a local favorite, serves up fine ribs with local blues performers. Other choices range from Phuket (Thai fare) to Sangria's Mexican Café (Mexican/Spanish dining, famed margaritas and sangria) to the exquisite dining room at the flagship Ritz-Carlton Hotel. A popular romantic dinner destination is the Sun Dial. Atop the Westin Peachtree Hotel, the revolving restaurant and lounge offer beautiful views of the downtown area. Arts and culture more your style? Then head to Midtown and the Woodruff Center, home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the 14th Street Playhouse and the High Museum of Art. The Midtown district also has America's oldest ballet company, the Atlanta Ballet, as well as the Atlanta Opera. For more on the area's Civil War history or simply to enjoy Mother Nature, take a trip to Stone Mountain Park. This expansive park is centered around Stone Mountain, the South's version of Mt. Rushmore. Fifteen bike and jogging paths weave their way up and around the mountain, each providing a different vista of the beautiful surroundings. Within a surprisingly short drive of less than a few hours, you can be at a weekend getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains - enjoying the lively and offbeat social and arts scene in Asheville, NC, cruising the Blue Ridge Parkway, or browsing the furniture manufacturers' outlets in Hickory and High Point. In four to five hours, you can be on the Georgia or South Carolina coasts - playing tennis, golfing and deep-sea fishing at Hilton Head or St. Simons Island. Even closer, Lake Lanier, just an hour to the northeast of Atlanta, is a nature-lover's paradise. And within a half-day's travel, you can find yourself at legendary golf courses such as Augusta National (home of The Masters), Pinehurst and Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.
