Boston

Page 1*Page 2
If your idea of live music doesn't include a smoky bar and amplifiers, take in a concert at Symphony Hall, listening to the much-heralded Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops. Spend a day at the Museum of Fine Arts to see one of the nation's most revered collections. Or mark your calendar for the annual African-American Theater Festival.

The food alone is enough to attract you to Boston. Sure, you'll find fresh seafood and baked beans nearly everywhere. But also try places like Chacarero (downtown's Chilean sandwich counter), Bukowski's Tavern (a dive-bar where a burger at lunch will set you back only $1) and Bomboa (for French-Brazilian fusion). For some fresh fish, there's no better place than Legal Sea Food. Tourists and locals alike enjoy the fare here, especially the crab cakes. Fine dining can be found across the city, but among the best is Umbria, on Franklin Street. This restaurant and nightclub occupies five floors, featuring fine Italian dishes. The bar gives you a choice of over 100 varieties of vodka - just don't try them all at once!

Dance and theater productions can be seen all over the city throughout the year, including at the Colonial Theatre and the Wang Center for the Performing Arts. Some of the world's best dance and music students study at the Boston Conservatory, which provides another scene for live artistic performance.

Aside from the Red Sox, sports fans will feel at home in the TD Banknorth Garden for a Celtics or Bruins game. The New England Patriots play in nearby Foxboro, Mass. When you're not watching a game, you can be rowing on the Charles or jogging (or power walking) on the paths along either the Boston or Cambridge banks of the river.

City life getting you down? Get away from the hustle and bustle to the mountains or the shore. A drive of just two to three hours will put you in the mountains of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, or the clapboarded towns of the Berkshire Hills. Cape Cod is only a short drive from downtown Boston, offering a respite from the city and a glimpse of small-town East Coast life. Be sure to visit Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket while you're here. Amateur sailors and fishermen fill the towns along the coast. Take a walk on the beach and gaze at the hundreds of lighthouses that dot the shoreline.
