Training

What kind of training can I expect when I join the company?

Our core training curriculum consists of 16 courses for store management executives and 21 courses for merchant trainees. Additional classes are available for you to pursue throughout your career. In addition, some divisions supplement the core and ongoing curriculum. Our divisional college relations managers can answer your specific questions.

At the corporate level, the Macy's, Inc. Leadership Institute is an innovative tool to help the company's executives, beginning with store general managers, feel increasingly competent, productive and challenged in their jobs.

Once my initial training is complete, are there any refresher classes?

Both Macy's and Bloomingdale's spend a great deal of time on training individuals in all levels of the organization, and all employees can expect several stages of training as they are promoted. All executives may select from various refresher courses. Because of the complexity of systems involved, merchants in particular have the opportunity to go through more formalized courses on an ongoing basis.

What will my job responsibilities be after training?

Buying - You will be responsible for assisting your buyer to run a multi-million-dollar business. You will assist in the analysis of your product to determine current trends and future buys. You will communicate with stores, vendors and distribution centers, as well as process orders and price changes for all stores. As you grow your knowledge, you will assist in market appointments to select new products. You also will get involved in the promotion of your products by assisting your buyer in reviewing advertising and promotional campaigns.

Store Management - After being placed in a department, you will assume appropriate management and leadership responsibility. You will merchandise the product on the sales floor, including setting up and displaying merchandise, marking down products, and making floor moves. You will work closely with sales professionals to ensure they are trained in how to connect with the customers. This includes assisting them in selling situations and techniques. Moreover, you will be responsible for helping to maintain a high standard for appearance of the sales floor. Most importantly, you will review and eventually analyze business results and take appropriate action to deliver sales results.

Growth Opportunity

How long will I have to remain in a position before I can be promoted?

Promotion is based on experience, performance and the availability of open positions so there are no specific guidelines that cover all scenarios. You will, however, find that every job and every promotion is based on your performance. We do recommend that you are in a position for at least 12 months, but if your skills indicate that you are ready for the next step and the appropriate position is available, we would certainly help you pursue the opportunity.

Will I have the opportunity to grow?

You are limited only by your own goals. In retail, countless opportunities abound. You can follow a traditional career path and grow to become a general manager or buyer, or explore opportunities to move into human resources, operations or marketing.

Culture

What makes Macy's, Inc. and its divisions a great place to work?

No matter who you ask, you will find that the people you work with strongly determine job satisfaction. Here you will find a challenging and supportive environment. You can have the independence you need to complete projects and assignments. And you can feel comfortable knowing that you have a support network of people who will help you through any rough spots. After all, everyone here knows what it's like to be new, and to learn a career for the first time.

Qualifications

Will I be at a disadvantage if I don't have any prior retail experience?

Prior retail experience is not a requirement. Our training is designed to teach an individual how Macy's and Bloomingdale's run a profitable business. By using hands-on training, we give the trainee real experience instead of the textbook version. Hands-on application, an emphasis on problem solving and an extensive set of courses are keys to our training process.

What majors are you looking for when you recruit?

  • We recruit from all academic majors. We are looking for leaders. Students should be able to articulate their potential value to the organization regardless of academic background.

  • We hire based on business needs. Each division reserves the right to hire based on its current and anticipated needs.

    Recruitment

What is the difference between an Internship and the Executive Development Program?

  • Internships are reserved for undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year in college and are usually available during the summer months for students interested in buyer/merchant, management, product development and some design career paths.

  • Some internships take place on longer rotations or during other times of the year. See the Internships section of the site for more information.

  • The Executive Development Program is designed for the recent college graduate, usually within 12 months of their graduation date and is a full-time executive position. This position combines a classroom training intensive program with the responsibility of on-the-job accountability in your field.

What do I do if Macy's or Bloomingdale's does not recruit on my campus?

  • The macyscollege.com and bloomingdalescollege.com websites were designed to reach out to students who can become leaders in our organization, no matter where they went to school. This site should educate you about not only our opportunities, but provide a platform to put you in touch with our recruiters once you submit an applicant profile. If you are talented and are the right fit for our current and future business needs, we want to know you.

  • You may submit an applicant profile for our review and attach a resume as well by clicking "Search Jobs/Apply Now" anywhere on the site.

What are the drop-dead dates to submit an applicant profile online for either internships or full-time Executive Development Programs?

  • Although you may submit a profile online at any time of year, positions are posted in the early Fall to correlate with our business needs. We begin intense recruitment online and on-campus each fall season. Some divisions recruit into the spring season.

  • Most internships take place during the summer months following a competitive hiring process.

How many positions are you hiring for online or on-campus?

  • We are committed to attracting and retaining top talent to lead our organization into the future. Hiring varies annually based on business need.

I submitted a profile online and have not heard from a recruiter. When will I be contacted for an interview?

  • You will receive an immediate auto-response to the email account included in your applicant profile. In addition, a recruiter will also follow-up with correspondence if there is an appropriate match between your interests, skills and experiences and available opportunities. We work towards a two-week response time but please be understanding during the peak on-campus event period when our recruiters are traveling extensively. Please read all correspondence carefully.

What is the length of time for an interview process?

  • Each division is responsible for its own hiring process. Assessing top talent is a time consuming process at the college level. Due to our nationwide reach through the macyscollege.com and bloomingdalescollege.com websites, we evaluate students daily for leadership opportunities and a future in our industry. Some positions require more than one interview and include a challenging assessment process. These steps are part of our commitment to finding the best talent for our organization.

    Citizenship

Does Macy's or Bloomingdale's sponsor international students with Visas?

  • Students must be able to present documentation indicating their legal eligibility to work in the U.S.

  • Students should also keep in mind that our opportunities are very competitive based on the number of applicants and our objective of career growth and longevity. Consideration should be given to long-term career objectives.

    Housing

Does Macy's or Bloomingdale's offer housing assistance during Internships?

  • We currently do not offer paid housing assistance and encourage students to research housing opportunities in their host city. Once an internship is secured, each division can provide you with helpful hints about how to pursue housing during your internship.
